Green Finance Market & Institutional Design Study

Developing a Green Finance Centre in Hong Kong in the Context of Green Development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

THE CHALLENGEGreen finance is a global phenomenon, but its interdisciplinary nature requires deeper research to inform effective policy. This three-year project aimed to bridge this gap by providing crucial policy research support to the governments of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. The interdisciplinary nature of green finance requires synergistic collaboration to fully understand and address the complex challenges involved1. This IPP-based project was a collaborative effort with PICO, the Financial Services and Development Council, China Emissions Exchange Guangzhou, and China Emissions Exchange ShenzhenTHE APPROACHWe employed a "Think-and-Do" approach, combining rigorous research with the development of technology prototypes and proof-of-concept financial products, in collaboration with industry partners and government units. This first-of-its-kind study addressed critical issues pertaining to green finance on an unprecedented scale.THE OUTCOMESThis research project advanced the intellectual frontier of green finance and directly benefited government and industry stakeholders by:

  • Assessing environmental risks on financial markets;

  • Developing climate risk modeling insights

  • Analyzing green infrastructure financing.

  • Exploring green finance enabling technologies.

  • Advancing talent capacity building.

  • Evaluating green finance policy effectiveness.

Digital Plastic Exchange Market Feasiblity Study across ASEAN region

CLIENT
The client desired to conduct a market entry and feasibility study to assess the viability of a global commodities exchange for plastic recycling within various countries across the ASEAN region.APPROACH
Engaging with this feasibility and market entry study, I conducted market and policy research, engaged external experts and stakeholders including circular economy specialists, government officials and recycling factories and facilitated consensus-building workshops to assess the overall feasibility in key markets including Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Bangladesh. I helped devise strategic recommendations for actionable short and long-term initiatives (i.e. business development opportunities, partnership synergies) moving forward in order to advance the client's platform within these countries.OUTCOMES
We helped onboard 30 key buyers and sellers from our selected countries onto the recycled plastics exchange through our market assessment study that also acted as several key strategic business development opportunities.
